MEET THE REAL WOMEN BEHIND THE STORY

At the Harvard College Observatory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a remarkable group of women known as the “Harvard Computers” analyzed thousands of photographic plates of the night sky. Working long hours cataloguing stars and measuring their brightness, these pioneering scientists—including Henrietta Swan Leavitt, Williamina Fleming, and Annie Jump Cannon—made discoveries that transformed astronomy and helped humanity understand the vast scale of the universe.

What makes this history especially powerful is how rarely it’s been fully told. For decades, the contributions of these women were overlooked or credited to others, their names footnoted rather than celebrated. And yet, their work laid the foundation for some of the most important breakthroughs in modern astronomy, including our ability to measure the distance between stars and galaxies. Silent Sky brings this hidden legacy into focus—honouring not only the science, but the perseverance, curiosity, and quiet brilliance of the women who forever changed how we see the universe.

Henrietta Leavitt Starry Portrait Shatterbox Theatre Silent Sky Play

Henrietta Swan Leavitt worked at the Harvard College Observatory beginning in 1893. Her discovery of the relationship between the brightness and period of Cepheid variable stars allowed astronomers to measure distances between galaxies and better understand the scale of the universe.

Annie Jump Cannon Starry Portrait Shatterbox Theatre Silent Sky

Annie Jump Cannon developed the modern system for classifying stars and created the famous O-B-A-F-G-K-M sequence still used today. Over her career, she catalogued more than 350,000 stars, becoming one of the most influential astronomers in stellar science.

Williamina Flemming Starry Portrait Shatterbox Theatre Silent Sky Play

Williamina Fleming began working at the Harvard College Observatory as a housekeeper before becoming a pioneering astronomer. She went on to discover the Horsehead Nebula and catalogue thousands of stars and nebulae, helping shape early stellar research.
